My buddy and I had a theory about Chef David. The flashback when he is berating Carmy was all in Carmy's mind and that he was actually not abusive to Carm at all, just tried to push him to be his best. But when Luca called him a "dickhead" made me realize that he was actually that much of an asshole. After the confrontation between him and Carey also was the final nail in Carmy's psyche coffin, as he basically brushed off Carmy's description of how abusive he was. Reminds me of Avengers Endgame "You took everything from me" "I don't even know who you are" It's pretty gut-wrenching that people can be this far up their own ass that they don't realize the damage they're doing to people.

“It’s not sweet. It’s fucked up” Like that’s just a sentence that everyone can say but it being said IN THAT MOMENT meant so much more and dug really deep into what traumatized children go through even when they grow to be adults. It IS fucked up. No one should ever have to feel terrible for doing that was supposed to be a good thing before it turned to indirect abuse. No one should ever have to be miserable just so the people they love can be happy. And no one should ever feel like everything they do isn’t enough no matter how long they try. The internalized “If I keep doing this then they’ll be happy” while not being guaranteed that it will finally make them happy is so damaging that not a lot of us can even recognize that giving up so much really isn’t sweet.

What's really striking is despite how Chef David Fields always berated, demeaned, and belittled Carmy during his employment--- he acknowledges after that Carmy is an excellent chef. Carmy wanting to tell him off for the sake of catharsis and have it turned around on him into appraisal and validation by David just completely upends it.

I think people are misreading this, Winger obviously knows carmen, even gives a subtle smile afterwards. "This is it, you are here" is the ultimate compliment. "You left an excellent chef" People saying winger came from a "priveliged" background and calling him an asshole dont have a clue. Chef winger obviously paid his dues, and understand carmen had to endure the same thing. And he did, and he has arrived. Carmen doesnt realize it till after winger goes to piss. Carmen finally got the approval from a man he has always feared but more greatly respected.

I notice that the people who elevate Chef Fields the most are only Carmen and Fields himself. The other chefs that have achieved greatness but also comfort with themselves realize Fields is an asshole and that overshadows however good he may be at cooking. It's Fields who keeps trying to justify that his behavior is somehow the best way to push someone (despite plenty of counter-examples) and Carmen I think wants to believe it otherwise his own abusive behavior, and the abuse he suffered, will have been for nothing. But after this conversation that illusion starts to crack for Carm.

I always hate how certain people in your life try to excuse their abusive, narcissistic, controlling, and neglectful behavior as a means of “making you stronger” or “bettering yourself” as if they get a gold medal for traumatizing you and making you feel like shit. Then they suddenly decide to switch character and try to take all the credit for your accomplishments because in their eyes they made you become who you are and it was all a means to an end. Sure, maybe to an extent you do learn how to be strong, stand your ground, and become more capable through the process. But it also gives you a life time of trust issues, anxiety, depression, self sabotage, and damaged relationships. Plus if there is any other way to strengthen us that doesn’t revolve around putting us in emotionally destructive situations we would have preferred any other option. And the fucked up part about it all, is that we only find out later in life that there was always another option. The person we dealt with purposely choose the worst one and we have to be the ones to unlearn it since they are unwilling to.

I just "finished" this episode, I put it in quotes because I couldn't make it past the 15 minute mark I was so bored. I hear about this big emotional revelation between these to two characters, but I couldn't make it to that point because it sucked so bad, not sure I would have even cared if I did make it to be honest.

This scene made my stomach sick. I wanted to throw up and I loved that this show was able to make me feel that way because it was so real. That's how it happens in rl, there is no final satisfying fuck you. This type of resentment is one of the worst feelings because you're still expecting something, you expect to win or an apology and Carmy never got that, the only thing he got out of this confrontation was the realization that he could have opted out and not continue under Chef David but he never did, he lost himself the moment he decided to stay. The apology was never supposed to come from Chef David, it was Carmy who was supposed to apologize to himself for putting up with that horrible human being and allowing all those horrible comments to change him. And realizing that hurts so much more than anything he could have said or done.

By far the best episode of any TV series I have seen and that includes every episode of the highly acclaimed West Wing and the first which receives my personal rating of 10/10 for production, directing, acting and original script. The director in my opinion demonstrated so much confidence with both his stillness and in his actors to deliver with a camera positioned at 90% choke close ups. I was so impressed The quality of the predominantly two character driven narrative was so impressive. Unlike anything produced for a long time I offer. Flawless. One line change perhaps...When Donna replied she is trying when asked how is it going by Natalie. I would have changed the line remarked by Donna instead to: Its a lot of stuff.. Great stuff.

I love how this whole part is because of the fact that everyone at that table is successful without going through the same sort of terrible work enviroment and mental abuse that Carmy went through (at least it's not said if they did) and the same with everyone who works in the restaurant they are in. But Joel McHale has this insane teacher complex that he needed to be such an asshole to make Carmy good and it's so obviously not true it's great.

I think the “mother***ker” at the end when he sees the review could be a reference to what chef David tells him. Kind of Carmy seeing that while he resents the hell out of David, the guy made him a better chef and that he’s a lot like him.

Having that kind of power over someone is cruel, and he just wanted to dip his feet in it once more by saying he owned a part of Carmy's success. What a prick.

It is, in the simplest terms I can think of, an absolute insult to these two insanely talented actors that they have to share a billing and act in scenes with Ayo Edebiri. She drags the entire show down with such dull, predictable, and one-dimensional acting. So much so, I almost give up on it completely every time an episode showcases her or even has her as a supporting character. But I don’t. Because then you stay with the show and you get this. A full blown masterclass on what I think is just about the highest level of acting.
